Embodied Emission Material Woes

The Embodied Emission Materials Form that is now required for larger projects is proving to be a bit difficult to navigate.  The portal seems to require an Embodied Emissions Material Form for every project, while it is only required, under the rules, for new buildings over $5m and for Major Renovations over $10m.

It seems the only easy way around this is to complete the form anyway with data that can be inaccurate by significant margins (bad data).  So, this work around means “bad data” is being collected for small projects, just adding cost for no clear benefit to anyone or for any purpose.  Part of the problem is the requirement for this document at DA stage.  Given that it is a data collection system of what materials are being installed it would be easier to collect and more accurate if it is collected at CC stage where there is more chance of the information being “good data”.

To add to the woes, the NABERS form to collect the information is a temporary spreadsheet that really does need to be improved, but the new tool is not available yet and there is no sign of when it will be.

Hopefully there is a way forward to stop collecting this information for small projects and getting more accurate data by collecting it later, using a better tool.

Consequently there is a need for assistance with getting this form completed, and we do this, because that is what we know and do.
